Hidden Lane Landfill – January 2025 Update

Please see the update below from the Hidden Lane Landfill Site team:

“The Hidden Lane Landfill Superfund Site team is writing to provide you a brief update on the site.

TCE Source Area– In early November 2024, EPA completed construction activities at the former landfill property for the source area excavation project. EPA disposed of approximately 15,000 tons of contaminated soil and debris at an approved off-site disposal facility, backfilled the excavation area with clean fill and topsoil, and graded and hydroseeded the disturbed area to help mitigate any future stormwater runoff issues.

In 2025, EPA will conduct a bedrock pilot study before completing the design for the in-situ bioremediation and chemical reduction of TCE contamination in groundwater remedy. EPA will share more information and schedule for this work in the coming months and at the next public meeting.

PFAS Sampling – In August 2024, EPA began sampling groundwater monitoring wells located on and off the landfill property for an emerging chemical contaminant known as Per- and Polyfluorinated Substances (PFAS). PFAS were present with several detections above Safe Drinking Water standards. EPA completed the first round of residential sampling in early November and anticipates a second round to be conducted in January 2025. A fact sheet was sent out to the community in September 2024. If residential samples are found to contain PFAS above Safe Drinking Water standards, EPA will work with its local and state partners to determine next steps to reduce or eliminate PFAS exposures until the public waterline has been installed.

Public Waterline – On December 23, 2024, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Baltimore District (through an Interagency Agreement with EPA), awarded the construction contract to provide public waterline to the Broad Run Farms neighborhood. EPA will be working very closely with USACE on a preliminary construction schedule. EPA hopes to have the schedule available to share with the community approximately 1-month after contract award.

We will continue to share updates with you as the site activities progress. If you have any additional questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us.

Thanks,
